Untitled, Art is an international, curated art fair founded in 2012 that focuses on curatorial balance and integrity across all disciplines of contemporary art. Untitled, Art innovates the standard fair model by selecting a curatorial team to identify and curate a selection of galleries, artist-run exhibition spaces, and non-profit institutions and organizations, in dialogue with an architecturally designed venue. De tentoonstelling The End of War opent op 11 november 1918. Die dag, 100 jaar geleden, werd een wapenstilstand afgeroepen voor de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Een vredesverklaring is nooit getekend. 21 jaar later wel een oorlogsverklaring, het begin van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Die oorlog zou het einde zijn van alle oorlogen. Die End of War is er jammer genoeg nooit gekomen.

In deze tentoonstelling schetsen kunstenaars beelden van oorlogen, conflicten en wapengeweld. Soms van grote schoonheid, soms confronterend, soms alleen om ons aan te zetten er over na te denken.

WINGING IT: FIGURES OF FLIGHT

Barely a hundred years have gone by since Nungesser and Coli’s L’Oiseau Blanc (‘The White Bird’) was been flying over the cliff at Étretat. Five hundred years separated Leonardo da Vinci’s sketch for a flying machine, the Ornithopter, from the aviator Louis Blériot’s Libellule (‘Dragonfly’). Both of them shared the same abiding and intrinsically human desire to leave the ground on which we humans are rooted and to launch themselves into the sky. From Icarus to Jules Verne and the superheroes of comics, the dream of wings to fly with has been a feature of our imagination.
The group exhibition À tire-d’aile explores the urge to fly and interpretations of it in contemporary creation. From the late 19th century and into the machine age, aviation gave practical shape to that dream. Photography and film were linked with the relevant inventions from the outset – both the exploits and the failures. Étienne-Jules Marey’s experiments with photography helped crack the mystery of bird flight. Later, photographers were witnesses and recorders of the appearance of aeroplanes and their pilots in the sky. Then, when whimsical minds and jokers got involved, photography revealed its ability to forge and fake reality, as exemplified by studio images that acted as precursors of the flight simulator.
Photographers responded naturally to the men who dreamt of flying and their need to give evidence of their deeds, creating images that ranged from the documentary to the poetic, sometimes dramatic and sometimes downright droll.
The exhibition will combine contemporary creations and archival and documentary images. The border between the documentary and the poetic is sometimes blurred. Sjoerd Knibbeler’s work, for example, which documents the ground routine of the French aerobatic display team, the Patrouille de France, is staged in such a way that it is like the film of a fairy ballet. Elsewhere, XiaoXiao Xu presents a collection of whimsical constructions by Chinese farmers.
Time is suspended in mid-flight, the fantasy frozen in mid-air… the fall may not be far off, but the discreet images here won’t let on.

Paradijselijke landschappen en sprookjesachtige natuur of juist melancholisch, absurd, angstaanjagend en vervreemdend. Expedition Nature toont werk van ruim twintig kunstenaars die op uiteenlopende wijze landschappelijke thema’s belichten. Op verzoek van CODA maakte beeldend kunstenaar Karin Bos een gevarieerde, rijke selectie van kunstenaars die werkzaam zijn in uiteenlopende disciplines. Sommigen benaderen het landschap documentair terwijl anderen manipulatief reageren of kiezen voor een meer wetenschappelijke benadering.

De kunstenaars in Expedition Nature vinden hun inspiratie buiten de muren van hun atelier. Reizen in binnen- en buitenland – soms zelfs buitenaards – geven voeding aan ideeën, beelden en verhalen. Als romanticus, ontdekkingsreiziger, onderzoeker, verteller of uitvinder belichten de kunstenaars in Expedition Nature de natuurlijke omgeving waarin ze verkeren. Soms legt het werk zelf een lange reis af op de weg naar vervolmaking.

Karin Bos

Een deel van Expedition Nature besteedt aandacht aan het werk dat Karin Bos (1966) in de afgelopen tien jaar maakte. Het landschappelijke in haar schilderijen en werken op papier is leidraad in haar onderzoek naar de relatie tussen de mens en het landschap of de natuur. Bos’ schilderijen laten sprookjesachtige maar vervreemdende en verontrustende landschappen zien. Met zorgvuldig gekozen kleuren en lichtval ontstaat een filmisch en geladen beeld van een wereld vol verhalen waarin niets is wat lijkt en waar een vrolijk vakantietafereel evengoed de plek van een verschrikkelijke misdaad kan zijn. Die meerduidigheid is kenmerkend voor het werk van Bos. De machtsverhouding tussen man en vrouw, volwassene en kind of kinderen onderling is een terugkerend thema.

Deelnemend kunstenaars

Bij het maken van de selectie kunstenaars is goed gekeken naar het verband met het werk van Karin Bos. Niet alleen de natuur en het landschappelijke spelen een rol maar ook het menselijk ingrijpen in de natuur komt in het werk van verschillende kunstenaars terug. Uit de geselecteerde werken spreekt zonder uitzondering een onderzoekende en open houding van de betreffende kunstenaars.

Interdisciplinaire​ ​Manifestatie​ ​op​ ​het​ ​snijvlak​ ​van​ ​beeldende​ ​kunst,​ ​filosofie​ ​en​ ​social​ ​media.

Het Mysterie van de Waarheid is een empirisch museum dat tijdens Museumnacht in Arti van start gaat. Een wereld van filterbubbels, feitelijkheden, post-truth, mythes en alternatieve feiten, waar kunstenaars als wetenschappers optreden, satire als smeermiddel fungeert, en leugens hoogtij vieren.

Voor deze Museumnacht Manifestatie is gekozen voor een topic dat nog nooit zo betrekkelijk werd gevonden als in deze tijd: De Waarheid. Manipulatie ligt op de loer en de grens tussen feiten en fictie vervaagt.

Hierbij wordt het publiek uitgenodigd en ondergedompeld in een parcour van kunstwerken: interactieve-, video- en geur-installaties, laboratoria en performances, door het hele gebouw van Arti et Amicitiae. Het parcour bestaat uit 3 onderdelen: 1. De waarheid, een reactie op de realiteit, 2. Feit wordt fictie, fictie feit, 3. Mythe en (vormen)taal.

Jacques & Miny Defauwes

In the early eighties, the orthopaedic shoemaker Jacques Defauwes and his wife Miny Defauwes-Bovens were introduced by the Limburg painter Lei Molin (1927-1990) to Jaap Mooy (1916-1987), an artist from Bergen. They soon built up a close friendship with Mooy. The couple were attracted to Mooy’s ability to put moral and spiritual matters into words, as well as to his social conscience and political engagement.

Their years of intense contact with the flamboyant all-rounder Mooy appear to have been formative for the Defauwes couple, who expanded their collection over the years with some remarkably contentious works by contemporary artists from the Netherlands and abroad.

Jacques Defauwes was also the initiator of and long-standing driving force behind the Parkstad Limburg Prize for young talent, and he and his wife regularly give commissions to artists.

About the exhibition
The exhibition The Jacques & Miny Defauwes Collection revolves around the friendship and protracted exchange of letters between the couple and Jaap Mooy. A selection of works by Jaap Mooy and by contemporary artists from the Defauwes collection forms the basis for a refreshing view of these distinctive collectors.

The exhibition includes sculptures by Piet Killaars, Andrei Roiter, Simon Schubert and Mehdi-Georges Lahlou, installations by Les Deux Garçons, Jeroen van Bergen, Jos Berkers, Tracey Snelling and Kristian Kozul, photography by Katharina Sieverding and works on paper by Hadassah Emmerich, Jasper de Beijer, Georg Herold, Alexander Gorlizki and Lei Molin.

The exhibition was prompted by the publication of the monograph North West – South East. Jaap Mooy, The artist and his collector, which Jacques and Miny Defauwes have published themselves. The monograph includes texts by Catharien Romijn, art curator of the DSM Art Collection and guest curator of this exhibition, Cees de Boer, independent curator and publicist, and Hans den Hartog Jager, writer and art critic. Guy Molin made the film about the Defauwes couple that will be shown at the exhibition.

Asya Geisberg Gallery is proud to present The Brazilian Suitcase, the latest solo exhibition of photography by Jasper de Beijer. A travelogue of imaginary expeditions in search of a lost civilization in the Amazon, the work is a blend of meticulous research, fictionalized narrative, staged photography, and virtual reality. The series expands on the Dutch artist’s familiar themes of the complex interaction of colonialism, “noble savages”, and the inevitable corruption and intermixing of opposing cultures. The Brazilian Suitcase consists of three distinct sets – black and white footage stills, smaller color works, and large color landscapes, with each series describing fabricated events occurring in 1926, 1979 and 2016.

In this time span of 90 years, De Beijer focuses on encounters between Western explorers and the native residents of the Brazilian jungle that show how both groups project their fears and desires onto each other, feeding carefully constructed myths. The expedition members, in their endless quest for the mystery of a lost civilization, leave a blueprint of traces in the forest; and in kind, each object, story, ritual or habit imported from the Western world becomes assimilated in the tribe’s mythology. The mutation that takes shape creates a distorted echo of Western culture. Eventually, lush nature engulfs everything, as the jungle erases historical specificity.Based on numerous reports of explorers, anthropologists, and documentary filmmakers, the artist uses photographs and videos shot during his trip to the Amazon rainforest, combined with objects made in his studio, computer-generated images, and archival footage of real expeditions. The constant back-and-forth between the “real”, touched by the artist’s hand, and the imaginary, created via the magical alchemy of the computer, parallels the conceptual time-shifts and culture-clashes in The Brazilian Suitcase.

De Beijer shows us an endlessly repeating mechanism where it is impossible to escape one’s own point of view. Perception itself creates a blind spot, as the need to look beyond oneself becomes a necessity. Without didacticism, De Beijer’s rich oeuvre gives a poetic and enigmatic story that mirrors what we could find in any historical era, but especially now as labels and origins grow increasingly useless as markers or explanations.

Jasper de Beijer attended the Amsterdam Hogeschool voor de Kunsten, and the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. He has exhibited widely throughout Europe and the United States. Solo exhibitions include The Hague Museum of Photography; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver; Museum Het Domein in Sittard, The Netherlands; the Museum de Hallen Haarlem, The Netherlands; Gallery Nouvelles Images, The Hague; Gallery TZR-Kai Bruckner, Dusseldorf; Hamish Morisson Gallery, Berlin; and the Empire Project, Istanbul. Residencies include The Instituto Buena Bista in Curacao and Kamiyama in Japan.
