About the Brazilian Suitcase:

Based on numerous reports of explorers, anthropologists and documentary filmmakers, De Beijer describes three imaginary expeditions that would have occurred in 1926, 1979 and 2016.

The artist uses photographs and videos shot during his trip to the Amazon forest in 2016, combined with objects he made in his studio, computer-generated images, and archival footage of real expeditions. In a timespan of 90 years, he shows three encounters between Western explorers and the native residents of the jungle. Both groups project their fears and desires on to the other group, feeding the myth that they have carefully constructed about each other. In their endless quest for the mystery of a lost civilisation, the expedition members leave their own blueprint of traces in the forest; every object, story, ritual or habit that they imported from the Western world becomes assimilated in the tribe’s mythology. The cultural mutation that takes shape becomes a distorted echo of Western culture.

With The Brazilian Suitcase de Beijer explains an endlessly repeating mechanism which exposes a situation where it is impossible to escape one’s own point of view. Perception itself and the need to look beyond that creates a blind spot for all involved. Although the elements, situations and actors may vary, the destiny of all those involved is inevitable from the very beginning.

About the Brazilian Suitcase:

The Brazilian Suitcase is an imaginary travel report of three different expeditions (1926, 1979 and 2016) to the heart of the Amazon forest, in search of a lost civilization at the lake of El Dorado. The narrative of the expeditions is based on numerous real accounts of explorers, anthropologists and documentary makers, where De Beijer uses a combination of footage shot by himself in the rainforest, objects built in his studio, computer generated images and archive material. In the timespan of 90 years we witness 3 different moments where an encounter takes place between the expedition members and the local tribe at their destination. Both groups project their fears and desires onto the other group, feeding the myth that they have carefully constructed about each other. In their endless search for the mystery of a lost civilization, the expedition members have left their own blueprint of traces in the forest; every object, story, ritual or habit that they imported from the western world becomes assimilated in the tribe’s mythology – the cultural mutation that takes shape becomes a distorted echo of our own culture. Two different strains of thought move alongside each other; the tribe’s desire to see the jungle through a birds eye view triggers their fascination for airplanes, giving the expedition members mythical powers. On the other hand, the mystical relation between the tribe and the lost civilization of their ancestors makes the expedition members dig deeper for the traces of this lost culture and its riches. The endless repetition of this continuous mechanism creates a situation where it is impossible to escape one’s point of view. About Lowland (Laagland):

Energy company Eneco approached the artist Jasper de Beijer (1973, Amsterdam) to produce an artwork especially for the company’s new main office in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The artist designed and developed three animation movies where the focus lies on the Dutch landscape.
For this project de Beijer has been focusing on the landscape drawings, etchings and engravings from Dutch masters like Hercules Seghers, Jacob van Ruisdael, Rembrandt van Rijn and Vincent van Gogh.
Their vision and interpretation of the Dutch landscape has been the starting point for developing his own vision  on the landscape through the ages; untouched and dynamic at the same time.
The artist has taken fragments of the works of these masters and translated these elements in a 3 dimensional surrounding; the result is that the world of these old masters comes to life in a virtual 3D environment, where pieces of drawings, etchings and engravings alternately play a role in a virtual trip through the landscape, from 3 different points of view we see the surroundings change, the time elapse, the style and artistic views interchange.
A journey through a landscape where everything changes, but remains the same.

UPROOTED: a duo show with Jasper de Beijer and Thijs Zweers

You are invited for the opening at Friday the 24th of June, from 1800 hrs until 2100 hrs

As artists, both Jasper de Beijer and Thijs Zweers tend to venture into the unknown. Zweers roams through the virtual realm, ending up deeper and deeper in its vaults and recesses. De Beijer travels into the jungle – both figuratively and literally – in search of the traces of failed expeditions.

For centuries, the forest has been a major theme in the visual arts, representing artists’ exploration of the subconscious. Behind every tree, every bush unfurls a new horizon: a new landscape to explore. Standing in the forest, the artist tries to distinguish the structure that underlies his surroundings, to resolve its mystery. The artist’s relationship with the forest has a certain dualism. The moment he is able to fathom the mechanism behind its apparent chaos, the landscape loses its sense of mystery. It loses its sheen, and he is forced to wander deeper into the woods in search of the ‘mechanics behind the mechanics’. Man’s constant quest to gain and understand new experiences explains his frantic curiosity and constant dissatisfaction.
Thijs Zweers sees the digital realm as an autonomous structure that – like a jungle – continues to proliferate and feed on what has come before. Any structure that it once possessed has long since dwindled into a vast horizontal grid, in which everyone is free to cultivate whatever he wants. In this world, exposure is the equivalent of daylight in the forest: across the planet, data turn to face the lit screen. Zweers hews a path through the dense undergrowth, in search of the roots of this immense chaos. He seeks to tame the dynamism of this digital jungle, by capturing its burgeoning images in the tangible and timeless medium of compressed charcoal on paper.
From the very start of his career, Jasper de Beijer has shown a fascination with voyages of exploration. For his latest project, ‘The Brazilian Suitcase’, De Beijer decided to follow the well-trodden paths of dozens of explorers who have ventured into the jungle in search of lost civilisations. All they ended up finding were the traces of their predecessors. The European interlopers have left an indelible mark on the jungle and its inhabitants, whose world has been changed forever. De Beijer holds a mirror up to the explorer’s face – showing that ultimately, the adventurer always sets forth in search of himself.
‘The Brazilian Suitcase’ records three different periods in history. For the final part of this trilogy, De Beijer travelled to the Amazon rainforest himself.

For the third part of his trilogy ‘The Brazilian Suitcase’, De Beijer will travel to Manaus (Brazil) in February. He will go to the heart of the dense jungle of the Amazon forest, where he will confront the reality constructed in his studio and on his computer with his experiences on location.

About ‘The Brazilian Suitcase’:

Popular stories about journeys in search of a lost civilisation tend to have a common theme. The adventurers’ expedition into the unknown ultimately leads to their demise. In his latest project The Brazilian Suitcase, Jasper de Beijer has superimposed a number of such accounts to create an artistic ‘blueprint’ of this phenomenon. Many people have been driven by ambition, curiosity and greed to seek the remains of ancient civilisations in the Amazonian jungle. Over the centuries, the process has repeated itself over and over, and these quests have left numerous traces in the once-virgin rainforest. The Brazilian Suitcase presents an imaginary tribe living in the heart of the rainforest. Its members have appropriated the paraphernalia of the European invaders, rearranging this fragmentary information in a distorted reflection of the modern world, and of the West’s longing for lost kingdoms and forgotten gods. The Brazilian Suitcase becomes a perpetuum mobile of confrontation and assimilation, mirroring the artist’s own artistic process.

For decades, the ‘North Pond Hermit’ avoided all contact with other people. He didn’t even make campfires, for fear of being discovered. Knight kept track of what was going on in the outside world by listening to news radio and rock stations on a battery-operated radio. He was ultimately apprehended by the police for burglarizing vacation cabins and a nearby holiday camp. With a radio as his sole source of information, Knight was more or less untouched by the visual deluge of the past three decades. His mental picture of recent events must have been entirely different to the images that are so familiar to us. Knight’s lonely forest clearing, these same events materialized in a self-contained universe. In his mind’s eye, the general, abstract reports on the radio were converted into specific visual details: a kind of ‘reverse empiricism’.

For his new series, the artist decided to keep clear of all photos and other visual input, consciously limiting himself to the bare reports. The images that have come out of this approach – created in response to more or less iconic events in recent history – are uniquely subjective.

The images could just as easily be relating an entirely different story; the blueprints of an alternate reality. Like the stream of consciousness that constantly unfurls in our mind, they are the artefacts of an inner world that at times seems almost random – or that at any rate is entirely personal, in every aspect.

Museumnacht Amsterdam

Jasper de Beijer at Arti et Amicitiae

On Saturday the 7th of November more than 50 Amsterdam based museums are open from 7PM until 2AM for the annual Museum Night. Apart from seeing the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions there is plenty more to see and do, also for non-Dutch visitors. On this 16th edition you can enjoy live music, DJ’s, dance, performances, film, special tours and food & drinks in the many museums of the city.

For the Museum Night you buy a ticket, which gives you entrance to the more than 50 museums on November 7th and 1 free extra museum visit valid until December 31st 2015 (Artis, Micropia, Harry Mulisch House and Heesterveld excluded, Rijksakademie only during RijksakademieOPEN. EXPOSITIE ‘ONTMOETINGEN’ IN HET DOLHUYS

In Het Dolhuys kom je de ander tegen en dus jezelf. Kunst en kennis gaan hier hand in hand. Het is de plek waar je betrokken raakt en waar je verwonderd stilstaat bij de mens. Het onbekende wordt zichtbaar in het Dolhuys, letterlijk in beeld gebracht en verbeeld. De mens is niet alleen maar mooi, ook de donkere kant van de mens zet aan het denken. De tentoonstelling ‘Ontmoetingen’ laat deze waarde van afwijkend gedrag zien.

De bezoeker wordt de vraag gesteld: Hoe waanzinnig ben jij? Vaak heeft men bij het horen van het woord waanzin een negatief beeld. Er wordt al snel gezegd: deze mensen zijn gek of gestoord. De geschiedenis wijst uit dat deze personen inderdaad vaak achter slot en grendel werden gezet, minder vaak ziet men ook de schoonheid en waarde van waanzin. Wanneer wijkt iemand af van de norm en waarom is juist iets dat afwijkt vaak zo interessant? De tentoonstelling ‘Ontmoetingen’ daagt de bezoeker uit over dit gedrag na te denken. Sommige werken zijn beangstigend, andere juist mysterieus of vol van emotie, maar allen zetten ze aan tot nadenken.

De kunstwerken die in deze tentoonstelling getoond worden laten elk op een andere manier de waarde en schoonheid van waanzin en afwijkend gedrag zien. Wat zit er achter de maskers van Angela Boogaard en Camile Smeets? Wat is het effect van leven en dood in het werk van Jasper de Beijer? De werken roepen allemaal een bepaalde emotie op. Angst of juist berusting in het werk van Wim Hardeman? Of zelfs humor in bijvoorbeeld de Eddies van Judith Heinsohn? Alle tentoongestelde werken zijn portretten en mensfiguren. De bezoeker wordt uitgedaagd zich te identificeren met het portret of de emotie die het werk oproept. Het confronterende aspect voor de bezoekers is hierbij van belang. Een uitdaging om door het tegenkomen van de ander ook jezelf tegen te komen. De kunstwerken zijn op verschillende plekken in Het Dolhuys te zien, de bezoeker loopt voor deze tentoonstelling dan ook een speciale Kunstlijnroute door het museum.

Aan deze tentoonstelling doen vijf prominente kunstenaars mee: Jasper de Beijer, Angela Bogaard, Wim Hardeman, Judith Heinsohn en Camile Smeets. De tentoonstelling ‘Ontmoetingen’ opent in de week voor het Kunstlijn weekend en zal daarna nog twee maanden te zien zijn in Het Dolhuys.

The Brazilian Suitcase focuses on three different points in time. De Beijer has created images that show the gradual integration of the explorer’s physical and mental residue, while simultaneously exploring the imaginary setting that he has constructed for this narrative. The first part of the trilogy is inspired in part by archive material donated to De Beijer by the surviving relatives of a Dutch archaeologist. The artist has used this footage as a starting point for an entire virtual environment, which he has built with the aid of 3D software. In the second part of the series, De Beijer will recreate these virtual surroundings in his studio. He will be building a life-size environment that shows the same place recorded in the first series of photos, but 50 years later. This new scenery shows how the once-isolated environment has been transformed over time by the initial incursion. In the third part of the series, De Beijer will travel himself to the dense jungle of the Amazon forest, where he will confront the reality constructed in his studio and on his computer with his experiences on location. The combined trilogy is a visual record of three different expeditions, illustrating the cause and effect of journeys of discovery over a period of 90 years. An imaginary patch of land is gradually transformed into an abstract concept: the distorted reflection of the West’s longing for lost kingdoms and forgotten gods. The Brazilian Suitcase becomes a perpetuum mobile of confrontation and assimilation, mirroring the artist’s own artistic process.
